What Indicates The Need To Replace A Surgical Instrument

Quality Surgical Instruments Replace Buy New

Surgical instruments are made from high quality materials and come with warranties, from manufacturers. However, wear and tear is imminent, even with regular maintenance.

After each intervention, after being cleaned and undergoing decontamination, surgical instruments go through two inspection phases: specialists check their surface and test their function, to make sure they can be used safely, next time.

If certain visual or functional defects are identified, it can indicate that a surgical instrument has to be replaced:

  • cracks or pitting in the metal
  • chipping on plated surfaces
  • misaligned or bent shanks or jaws
  • loose pins etc.

As for functional testing, there are different methods used by the specialists, according to each surgical instrument, as there is no single testing protocol to test all of them.

With proper maintenance and use, the lifespan of surgical instruments can be greatly increased, but this also depends largely of their quality from the surgical instruments suppliers. For example, an instrument manufactured by a German brand (German-made instruments are known to be the best) will last much longer than one made from substandard materials, by a no-name manufacturer.

Therefore, in order to prevent the need to replace surgical instruments too soon, keep in mind that maintenance and cleaning efforts pay off in the long run.
