What Are The Most Frequently Replaced Surgical Items Used At Hospitals

Medical Supplies Surgical Instruments How Often To Replace

Surgical supplies represent one of the largest expenditures in most hospitals and other healthcare centers' budgets, not just because they are quite expensive, but also because they must be replaced frequently.

There are two types of surgical instruments: single-use and reusable. However, even reusable ones must be replaced as soon as the specialists` evaluations reveal that they have lost the original properties, because the quality of the surgical items is not something to compromise on.

The highest turnover of medical supplies is recorded in the operating rooms of large hospitals and in emergency units, where instruments (hemostatic forceps, scalpels, surgical scissors, forceps, anesthesia syringes, spinal needles, etc.) are heavily used. For the safe use of these instruments, it is mandatory to be cleaned, sterilized and stored in proper conditions, which requires the use of special accessories, as well as indicators having the role of differentiating sterilized surgical tools from non-sterilized ones.  Surgical tool suppliers make available basic surgical instruments made from high quality German steel and do not need replaced as often.

In addition, surgeons and nurses must wear special medical uniforms, during work hours, to reduce the risk of bacterial infestation. For this reason, medical uniforms represent other frequently replaced accessories (medical uniforms typically consist of gowns, but also surgical gloves, surgical masks and shoes protection.
