Sterilization of the surgical instruments is essential for the safety of the medical interventions and involves a complex process by which the microbial flora (vegetative and sporulated form of bacteria, viruses, fungi) on the materials subjected to the process is completely destroyed. The efficiency of orthopedic instruments sterilization depends on the following stages: pre-sterilization, the stage involving the preparation of instruments for sterilization, and sterilization methods.
Pre-sterilization involves immersing the instruments in a bath with disinfectant that has cleaning properties immediately after sterilization. Before this stage, pre-washing and normal cleaning are required. After this disinfectant is allowed to action, the instruments are washed thoroughly with adequate brushes, in order to remove all forms of organic matter. Extraction forceps and other surgical instruments are subjected to the same pre-sterilization steps but in separate containers, then dried and cleaned again, if necessary.
After drying and the instruments are verified, packed in special foils and grouped in metal boxes, together with other instruments. Each of them is labeled carefully, according to the current regulations.
The time of sterilization is written on each instrument and also mentioned in a sterilization notebook, together with the type of sterilization and the parameters of the devices.
