
There are a number of essential steps to properly decontaminate and disinfect reusable surgical orthopedic instruments and others. Cleaning surgical instruments properly minimizes the risk of postoperative infections or complications. All surgical instruments must be intact and comply with international sterilization standards.
The cleaning and decontamination process is very important and must be performed immediately after the end of a surgical procedure. Despite the fact that the instrumentation is made of high-quality stainless steel, the salt found in biofluids will soon begin to corrode the tools and reduce their lifespan.
- Cleaning (decontamination)
Immediately after the medical operation, the instrument is immersed in a special enzyme detergent solution, in a box with a lid. It must be completely immersed in the solution, where it will remain for the time specified by the manufacturer.
- Rigorous rinsing
The instruments taken out from the enzyme solution must be rinsed rigorously, by brushing them with a soft brush, under running water.
- Disinfection
Disinfection can be chemical (performed by immersing the instrument in disinfectant chemical agents - example: alcohol, iodine, peracetic acid, glutaraldehyde, hydrogen peroxide etc.) or thermal (performed with steam or hot water, in automatic machines).
The disinfection process must be followed by checking the integrity of each instrument.
- Packing
Packing the instruments safely and sterilization is the final step, followed by storage in a proper environment, until the next use.
