New research has not only identified how much time these items remained undetected, but also the main reasons why such incidents happen.
Surgical tools left in patients occur in all types of surgery, but most often in abdominal surgery. They may also occur during postoperative care, when the use of surgical drains is involved.
In order to prevent such incidents, at the end of the surgical intervention, doctors and nurses have to make the tool inventory; their number must be confirmed verbally. Even if this stage is repetitive, it is essential not to be neglected, because this way the medical team can quickly remedy this type of malpractice incidents.
In the unfortunate situation where the number of initial instruments does not coincide with the number existing after performing the intervention, the medical team will promptly take the necessary measures and, if necessary, radiographs will be performed.
