Tools used in surgical practice are very diverse. There is a category of general surgical instruments, used in any intervention and representing a minimum necessary for any maneuver, as well as special instruments that are specific to each surgical specialty (ophthalmology, orthopedics, neurosurgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, microsurgery etc.).
Within the general instruments, we can talk about the following sub-categories:
- Tissue cutting tools
Generally, two types are being used: scalpel and scissors.
- Grip tools
The surgeon's left hand is the one that grabs the tissues instrumentally (with anatomical forceps), presenting them to the right one that sections, dissects or sutures.
- Hemostatic tools
This term defines a whole series of autostatic forceps. They can be locked, which allows them to remain closed and fixed on the tissue.
- Exploration and dissociation tools
These include the grooved probe and the button stylus used to explore trajectories, such as fistulas.
- Tissue removal tools
Often, in-depth exploration of an accidental or surgical wound requires certain tools to move the tissues away, allowing the visualization of deep details. These tools can be of two categories: mobile (the most used are Farabeuf spacers) and autostatic.
- Suturing tools
They are generally pliers, but with a strong enough grip to avoid twisting or dropping the needle during handling.
- Tools for marking the fields
The soft material (gauze) used to dress the wound is fixed to the skin with the help of special tools that delimit exactly the operative field.
