When it comes to the manufacture of surgical instruments, there are special requirements related to their design and use. First and foremost, all the metals used in the process, must provide a very high degree of protection against corrosion. Additionally, metals must be biocompatible, that is not producing any toxic/immunological response when being in contact with the body or bodily fluids. Not least, metals should be non-magnetic, to prevent the creation of magnetic fields by devices such as the MRI scanner.

Surgical steel is the best and most popular material used nowadays, often in composition with other metals that improve its qualities.

Steel containing molybdenum and chromium is used in high-strength medical instruments and tools that can be repeatedly sterilized; such products are resistant to mechanical damage and high temperatures. Steel with chromium and nickel content has a high resistance to oxidation and therefore can be used in medicine, where there is an aggressive, acidic environment.

Austenitic, martensitic and ferritic stainless steel is most often used for medical instruments. Products made of such steels have a high resistance to corrosion and micro-cracking, although only under certain conditions: with proper heat treatment, polishing and use in environments appropriate to the chemical composition of the alloy.
