Veterinarians use some of the same surgical instruments as regular surgeons, because the operations on animals require the same level of precision and are performed according to the same principles as the operations on humans.
Surgical Clamps and Forceps
These surgical instruments are designed for holding tissue and there are different types that can be used during surgery on animals: intestinal forceps, artery forceps etc.
Saws
Saws are also necessary on animals to perform different orthopedic procedures (arthroplasty or osteotom). Some are adjustable, allowing finer techniques in delicate surgeries, such as hip dysplasia.
Catheters
In the case of animals, catheters are fed into the cephalic vein and used to administer fluids. There are also indwelling urinary catheters, which are used in the case of acute kidney injury.
Electric Razors
Veterinarians typically use electric clippers or curved scissors for shaving pet hair around the site. It allows a clear visual and prevents infection (animal hair carry bacteria).
Cauteries
These heated tools are used to stop bleeding, by sealing blood vessels, when cutting through skin and muscle.
These surgical instruments are not different from those used on humans. In some cases (e.g. anesthesia machines), they are actually ex-hospital machines.
