The most common material, used in the production of surgical instruments for decades, is surgical grade stainless steel. It has great strength and corrosion resistance and it is easy to clean, which is a great advantage in the surgical environment, where hygiene is a high priority.

Another material currently used in the fabrication of surgical instruments is Polyetheretherketone, which was developed by the US aerospace industry, in the ‘70s. It is biocompatible and great for retractors and valves designed for access to the spinal column.
