While each type of surgery requires specialized
instruments, each operating room is equipped with a set of basic instruments.
Here is what each OR needs to have:
-
Instruments for cutting and dissecting
– this set includes mechanical instruments, such as scalpels, scissors and saws
as well as electrical and electronic devices, such as the devices used for
cautery;
- Instruments for holding and grasping – this set consists mainly of clamps and forceps;
- Hemostatic instruments – most surgical interventions are associated with some bleeding, so the set of essential pieces of equipment in any operating room must include devices to stop bleeding, such as artery forceps, devices for cautery and for suture;
- Instruments for exposing the body area that is being operated on – revealing the surgical area and keeping the area visible is essential in any surgery. The process is realized with the help of retractors of various shapes and sizes, all essential components of basic surgical sets;
- Materials and instruments used for unifying tissues at the end of the surgical intervention – each surgery ends with the closure of the surgical area. The devices used for the process include needles, threads, needle holders, sutures, glue, staples as well as the instrument necessary for applying these materials.
