Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Surgical Instruments

Surgery Orthopedic Surgical Instruments Inspection
Surgical instruments are made from materials of the highest quality – the metal alloys as well as the other materials, such as the various types of special plastics, are all extremely durable and resistant. However, even the hardest and strongest material can get damaged, especially the materials that are extensively used, so here are some of the signs that tell you it is time to replace your surgical instruments:

-          Visible signs of mechanical damage – the forceps, scissors, scalpels, clamps and retractors that you use for your surgical interventions need to be free from rust and from any type of mechanical damage and they also need to be razor-sharp. The regular inspection of your orthopedic surgical instruments is essential for revealing any such damage – when you do notice any such issue, make sure to replace the damaged item right away;

-          Signs of damage in endoscopic and laparoscopic instruments – heat-sensitive endoscopes and laparoscopes can suffer damage when sterilized at high temperatures. The signs of damage might include mechanical deterioration or improper functioning when attached to the camera and the display;

-          Calibration issues – many surgical needs need to be calibrated to function within specific parameters. If the calibration attempt fails, the instrument can no longer be used.
