The History of Surgical Instruments and Their Role in Medicine

surgical tools dentistry medical field

Surgical instruments are specially designed tools for performing certain important actions during a surgery or medical procedure. As time went by, many different types of surgical tools were invented, each with its very own specific purpose and role. We should note here the fact that the names used for surgical tools usually follow certain specific patterns, like that of describing the exact action they usually perform: hemostat, scalpel, together with the name of the person who invented it, as well as a scientific name which is related to the type of surgery they are used for.

We could speak about seven different classes of surgical instruments. First of all, there are the ones used for grasping, called graspers, and which include forceps and tweezers. Then there are occluders and clamps, retractors which are used for spreading the open skin and other types of tissues, as well as positioners, distracters and mechanical cutters. Among the many other types we could mention powered devices like dermatomes and drills, injections and needles, measurement devices such as calipers or rulers, and so on.

Apparently, surgical instruments have been used since ancient times, ever since the Neolithic age. After the invention of anesthesia, a lot of new tools got to appear and began to be used all over the world.
