The operating room is equipped with a wide variety of surgical instruments and tools, for performing different procedures and special tasks. Without being exhaustive, we present you here with the basic instruments which every clinic should have at its disposal.
For instance, blades should never be absent from a clinic. There are several different types of blades, depending on the exact type of incisions which need to be made during surgery.
Scissors are yet another good example of essential surgical tools. We could mention here heavy scissors, which could either be straight, for cutting suture, or curved scissors, generally employed for cutting through heavy tissues, such as the fascia. For cutting more fragile and delicate tissues, lighter scissors are generally used, such as the Metzenbaum scissors. For making incisions in small vessels, even smaller and more precise scissors are necessary, such as the Iris scissors or Pott’s scissors.
Forceps also vary in shape and size, depending on their exact purpose. For delicate handling of tissues, non-toothed forceps are employed, whereas for skin closures, Adson forceps are required. Bonney, DeBakey and Russian forceps are yet some good examples of instruments which should be found in mostly any clinic. Crile hemostat and Kelly clamp are two other great additions to a clinic’s surgical equipment that can be found at Apiary Medical online.
