Typical Steps That Are Followed During Surgical Prep

preoperative care instructions patient doctors surgical tools

Proper preparation for surgery improves the prognosis and reduces the risk of intra - or postoperative complications.  Preparation needs to be done from the professional view starting with operation room readiness including the surgical tools and also from a patient's view.

General preparations

  • Helping the patient to mentally prepare for the operation
  • Evaluating the patient body's defense capacity, reactivity and resistance
  • Strengthening the body's resistance by hydro-electrolytic rebalancing, protein, carbohydrate, and vitamins intake
  • Establishing the date of the surgery, depending on the patient's condition
  • Emptying and, if necessary, washing the natural cavities of the body
  • Preparing the patient for being introduced in the operating room

In order to evaluate the body's resistance capacity, as well as potential reactions to drugs, the patient must go through a set of medical tests.

The diet will also be adapted, ensuring the body's energy needs. In the evening before the operation, the patient should only drink fluids, and, on the big day, they will not be allowed to eat at all, otherwise gastric lavage must be performed.

In the evening, before the operation, and in the morning of the surgery day, the patient will be subjected to a general cleaning process. The incision area will be subjected to a rigorous hygiene: it will be washed thoroughly, shaved, degreased with organic solvents and disinfected with iodinated alcohol.

Special preparations

These consist of measures applied only in the case of certain surgeries or certain patients and aim to rebalance some functional deficiencies of the body.
