How Large Is A Typical Operating Room Team?

If you are preparing for a surgery, you surely have many questions in your mind. One of the things people ask very often is related to the operating room and the people that will be in there with them.

It is not easy to estimate the size of a typical operating room team, because it depends mostly on the type and complexity of the surgery you will go through.

Here is a general list of people who are typically in a surgical team:

  • The surgeon

A surgeon is the leader of the OR - a specialist who will perform the procedure and coordinate the entire team. Complicated surgeries can be performed by more surgeons. Besides, a surgeon can have a resident surgeon by their side, who is there to get some experience.

  • The anesthesiologist

Surgeries are performed under anesthetic, and it is the anesthesiologist who is responsible for inducing sedation and monitoring the patient (controlling breathing, heart rate, blood pressure…).

  • Surgical technicians

They clean the area before the surgery, transfer you to the operating table, sterilize the surgical instruments, hand surgical instruments to the surgeon, upon request, during the operation etc.

  • Students

Students may be included in surgical teams as observers, for educational purposes.
