In the US, the price of surgical protective equipment has exploded due to the pandemic. According to a report published by CNN, in April-May 2020, the national strategic stock of the federal government almost emptied, and the states had to find resources on their own, to buy the medical equipment and surgical instruments necessary for protection.
Costs continued to rise, then remained fairly high due to panic buying and misuse. Manufacturers of surgical supplies - especially masks, gloves and other equipment used in the fight against Covid 19 - now charge higher prices and sell in bulk to buyers willing to pay the most.
Many hospitals and medical centers used to order their products from overseas, where they built relationships with manufacturers. Unfortunately, with the outburst of the pandemic, they found out that these relationships do not work anymore. All that seems to matter now is the almighty dollar. Those who have the most money will benefit from the supplies they need.
The cost of N95 masks increased by 1.513% (from $ 0.38 to $ 5.75), the cost of surgical gloves increased by 300%, and the cost of surgical gowns - by 2000% - according to the same report.
People`s worries about the rising cost of surgical supplies are not abstract and the solution to maintain stable prices lies in regulations to ensure that surgical protective supplies are distributed in an equitable and transparent manner.
