Each field of surgery has its own
set of specialty instruments – here are the ones most commonly used in
orthopedic surgery:
- Instruments for treating affections of the hands and the wrists – these procedures need retractors for soft tissue as well as for bones, forceps and curettes, bone distractors, clamps, drills and drill bits, cutters and screwdrivers, pins and wires. Other special instruments required might include special holders and micro hand instruments;
- Instruments for operating on legs – the most frequently used, most important instruments used in podiatry are very similar to the sets used for operating on hands, but legs being longer, thicker limbs, the tools might need to be larger and the rotating instruments stronger. Special interventions might require the usage of special instruments for operating on feet and ankles;
- Hip and knee instruments – the basic set for hip and knee surgery is the same as for the previous two categories, but special pins and wires might be necessary for joint replacement interventions;
- Instruments for operating on shoulders – the sets needed for this type of surgical interventions include the instruments of general use necessary for any orthopedic intervention, plus the specialty tools, determined for each intervention and based on the surgeon’s preferences.
