How A Better Surgical Instrument Results in Better Surgery

Better Surgical Instruments

The success of any surgical intervention is determined by three factors: the skill level and experience of the surgeon, the condition and the quality of the surgical instruments used and the condition of the patient. Here is how better basic surgical instruments leads to better outcomes in the OR:

-          Mechanical instruments – the scalpels, retractors, saws, needles and other instruments need not only to be perfectly sterilized, but they also need to be in perfect condition, perfectly sharp and perfectly maintained. This also means that the proper maintenance of surgical instruments requires other specialized equipment, such as sterilizers and the right sterilization, maintenance repair procedures also need to be followed to maintain the instruments in top condition at all time;

-          Advanced surgical instruments – modern surgery uses not only mechanical instruments, but electrical and digital devices as well. The endoscopes, otoscopes, laryngoscopes and other imaging devices are as much parts of modern surgery as the various screens used for monitoring the condition of the patients before, during and after the surgery. The most modern surgical departments today also use surgical robots to perform interventions with the highest level of precision and the future of surgery will probably see more and more surgeries performed with the help of robots.
